Introduction

In order to understand what it means to live in freedom, freedom must be clearly defined. Freedom is defined as “the power or ability to act, speak, or think as one wants easily”. It does not mean that options or choices are removed. To provide some context initially when people were created there was total freedom. Body, soul & spirit were not hindered, restrained or captive to anything. When the first humans Adam & Eve chose to do something not in God’s will, people became a slave to the sin (Ephesians 2:1-3, Romans 5:12, Colossians 3:5). This is the state of people and though people can have improvements in areas of their lives (ex. not being an alcoholic, recover from sickness, and etc.), freedom in a holistic sense cannot be achieved by human effort (2 Corinthians 3:17, Romans 6:22). The summary for freedom is described by Jesus in the following way: “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32). If you are not living out your freedom given by Jesus, you likely do not fully know and/or believe some truth!
